I am in the market for a new Heat Pump and air handler. So far, I have had Trane and Lennox come out for an estimate. American Standard is next up. The system is split. Both stated I need a 4 ton unit. The Lennox dealer states he will put a 4 ton compressor outside and a 5 ton air handler inside, if I want, for the same price as a 4 ton handler. First, should I do this? Is there an advantage to having a 4 ton unit and a 5 ton handler? He said it will blow more air. Is ther any downside to this? I would appreciate any advice. Thanks.
Oh yea, I am in South Georgia and the house is 2500 sq ft

Keep in mind that heat pumps have 2 ratings-SEER for AC and HSPF for heating. Ask both dealers to perform a Manual J heat/cool load calculation for properly sizing equipment and provide you a written copy along with the expected ratings for the size recommended. I don't see anything wrong with the larger air handler as long as the upfront cost is not more. I am not certain why the Lennox dealer would want to do this unless it gives you a better SEER/HSPF ratings. It may though cost more to operate. I would look into a variable speed air handler for comfort, improved dehumidification, quieter, better air quality, reduced operating cost.Check warranties out for a complete system. I prefer Trane/American Std. Depending on your timetable, these companies usually have a rebate program in the fall on selected equipment. Also have your ductwork thoroughly inspected.
My Opinion.
Good Luck!

Thanks for the input. I am finding that buying one of these ranks right up there with car shopping, except I know more about cars......

You dont say what you have there now. if you have a 4 ton now will the duct work take the 5 ton blower??? You dont say what the SEER is that they want to put in. Where you are Id go for a seer of 14 or better Trane has the SEER up to 19 now.

Currently I have a 3 ton Payne (out and in) I am not sure of the SEER, it is 11 years old. I don't know if the duct would handle a 5 ton blower though, good question. I have just never heard of going larger indoors as opposed to the outside unit. I know we need a 4 ton compressor due to a bonus room which was added on.

If you do it all new heat and cool. Trane will give a 10 year warranty.

Did they say 5 ton airhandler inside or 5 ton coil inside?
