Hello,
I just bought a dinning buffet made in the 1960's. It looks like it is solid wood (which kind I don't know) expect for the top which is a laminate and on the top edge of the drawers which looks like a plastic trim. I don't know what type of finish it has (it does come off with nail polish remover, oops) but I would like to restain it using a darker stain like a chocolate or espresso. I have never done this before and I am concerned about what to do with the top and plastic trim. Thank you for any help.

You can strip and stain and finish the wood. If the top is high pressure, plastic laminate akin to Formica, stripping won't benefit it. Stripper may damage both top and the drawer trim.
Hope this helps.
