I'd like to remove my existing tub/shower, build a knee wall across the opening, and make the are into what looks like a fully-tiled shower (no pan in the bottom) with a high rim. The important detail is that the bottom of the "shower" would be filled like a tub. I've seen it done but I can't find any information or plans for such a project. Any pointers?

Lisa,

I've put off replying to your post, hoping someone else would come along.

What you are suggesting is one of the most complex projects that a tile setter might run into. It even goes beyond building a complete ceramic stand up shower, which is a difficult proposition.

Waterproofing the tub portion, for example, is a nightmare, and it must be waterproof, because no ceramic installation is watertight.

I hate to be one of those pros who tries to discourage folks from tackling projects, but this one, I think, is just too much for the do-it-yourselfer.

Okay, now you can start throwing stones at me.

Hi Lisa;
Of course it can be done but, I would recommend that a professional do it. To do this the correct way you still need a "thick mud" pan and you also have to consider an overflow capability and, waterproofing it all can be challenging to say the least. Like John said this is a very complex project that needs to be done correctly the first time or, you will have a mess. If your serious about the plans I can draw them for you. Go to my website and fill in the info on the "job quotes page" and we will see what we can come up with.
Good Luck and Regards
