Everything was going just fine with our ten year old Culligan Mark 89 (used, from hubby's uncle). We've been using it for almost 2 years. This time, when we added salt, it just stopped. I can manually cycle the thing, but nothing seems to happen. It makes noise and seems to run through it's cycle, but the water is horrible and is getting worse. We have iron and iron bacteria. Is there something we should clean/remove/replace?
We're really rural, difficult to get repair service and it'll cost the moon just for a home visit.
Thanks for any advice,
AD

Just bumping this thread -- problem continues, we can't get service here, and I hope someone has an idea! We've emptied and cleaned the brine tank, set everything back up, and have seen no improvement. Anyone? Anything?

From the overwhelming amount of replies I've received to this thread, I doubt anyone will care, but our Culligan softener is fixed. Here's what we did -- just in case anyone else out there is having some of the same trouble we had. The dealer 60 miles away agreed to work on our Mark 89 if we'd bring it to him. He replaced valves and cleaned the resin bed. He said that the iron sediment in our water supply had built up and clogged several screens inside the lines. He sold us a powdered chemical to dump in the brine tank that would help clean this residue out and keep it from building up. Our system is working better than ever and the charge was a very economical $130. He also showed my husband how to clean those screens himself so we could save the money next time.
