Dining tables can be a difficult project for en experienced woodworker, let alone a newbie. A small diameter table would be easier to try out your skills first before spending the money on expensive hardwoods for a larger project, and not getting the results you want.
However, if youd like to get some ideas, and maybe even some plans, the very first "sticky" thread in this forum entitled "Free Woodworking Plans & DIY Projects" may have a link to a plan that can work for you.
