When I operate a portable air conditioner (9,000 BTU/hr, 1,120W/9.7A), it often trips the circuit breaker which controls about 1/2 of the second floor(2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms on 2nd floor). Looks like I am overloading this circuit. I need advice on what to do. I am not much of a do-it-yourselfer, so I just want advice on what I can ask an electrian to do--add a new circuit? split the circuit, or what're my opitons/costs? Thanks in advance.

It would probably be less expensive to run a dedicated circuit for the A/C. With it only drawing 9.7 amps & tripping a breaker, if someone tried to use a hair dryer it too would probably trip the circuit.

Hi Grady,
What's a typical cost of asking an electrician to do as you suggsted--running a new dedicated circuit? Thanks.

No one online could begin to give you an idea as to cost due to your particular application & local variations in charges.
