We just broke our vertical blind cord but were able to restring it up to the part where the break occurred. It seems it was repaired before with what looks like a small chrome colored ball. The ball has a slit and it either held just one end of the cord or both, then it was squeezed tightly closed to hold the cord together and allow it to work. Does anyone know where I can get a replacement ball like this or a similar connector that will piece the cord together without my having to replace the entire cord? The replacement looks like a tricky difficult job.

The little ball is a safety thing that allows the strong cord loop to part before the toddler's neck hangs up in it.
You can force the cord ends back in. This just requires strong fingers or maybe pliers and an old butter knife. The metal will be hardened spring metal, meaning it doesn't much bend, open or shut.
You may join the ends with a sheet bend or decorative knot at your own discretion.

If the ball you are talking about is inside the track, it is placed on the cord so that it pulls the the first vane which in turn moves all the others. The cord is one piece. If my assumption is correct, this is not a job for you.

I still hope I can hook the two ends of the cord together; what is a "sheet bend"? I assume a decorative knot is just any kind of knot that might hold the two ends of the cord together. Thanks for the replies.

Test johnam's suspicion first - try to operate the blind with the cord as is. If it works, then you can join the ends like so:

You can not use the bead (ball as you call it) to re-connect the cord back together, the cord must be replaced, it's a simple process,
There are two types of track...one-way draw and center open, on a one-way draw that bead is used to pull the dummy carrier over to hold up the pinion when the slats are in the stacked position, on a center open blind there are two beads connected to the cord on the lead carrier to draw it across.

This question was asked almost 3 years ago. Hopefully the blinds have been fixed by now. :D
