I have a GE side by side fridge (Model #GSH25KGMB BB) with an icemaker/water dispenser. The icemaker has a horizontally positioned lever that stops the unit from making ice once the bucket is full. It has been working fine for the past three or four years until recently.

The horizontal lever continuously ices up and the icing pulls it to the off position preventing the unit from making ice. I have to manually break the ice off of the lever so that it can make ice. It appears that there may be small droplets of water leaking directly onto the lever causing the problem

Has anyone had any experience with this problem? If so is there an easy fix?

Thanks,

Tony

It sounds like you may have one of two problems:
(1) The mixing valve may be weak and not sealing after the solenoid de-energizes or you may have trash trapped in the valve itself. This allows the water to trickle up the tube and down into the tray, overfilling the tray and leaking onto your bar.

(2) The gasket may be damaged on the freezer door allowing humid, hot air into the compartment. (This would be the case only if the bar was crusted in a thin layer of ice)

Have you ever cleaned a mixing valve before? It's not that hard, but you do need a little experience. First of all make sure the power is cut off to the unit and then unplug it to be safe. It's better to get an exploded view of the mixing valve from a dealer or service tech - if you know one personally. It's not something to do with no guide of some sort for help.

With as much silence around the unit as possible, can you hear the solenoid energizing and shutting off? If so, get a flashlight and see if the water shuts off to the ice tray when the solenoid shuts off. If you see a trickle of water afterwards, it's the mixing valve.

Another thing could be the adjustment of the cube size. There should be an adjustment screw on the outer face of the icemaker. You will need to remove the faceplate to adjust it.

Maybe another member will come along with more insight.
