I am about to install some step flashing on a sidewall of my house. It is my understanding that I am not to nail the flashing on to the veritical wall only overlap it with siding (in this case cedar shakes). Why is this?? What keeps water from getting in between the wall and the flashing??

The idea is that once the top of the step flashing is covered with siding, it is not exposed to the weather. If you will be installing cedar shingles as siding, your 30# felt should overlap the top edge of the step shingles to ensure nothing goes behind them.

And you are correct, they don't get nailed to the wall sheathing, only the roof sheathing.
