I am requesting assistance both for design and construction of strong, rolling clothing racks. Those I've tried from retailers have proven to be unable to support the 200+ pounds of clothing hung on them. What happens is the uprights (always a single pole at either end)bend and sag. The aesthetics are not so important as the function. The height of the hanging bar should be six feet. The option of a second bar parallel to the top (beneath it, not alongside) is most desirable. I must add that I am barely an amateur "craftsman." Galvanized pipe, wooden 2X4s, conduit and other materials are being considered. Any suggestions will be welcomed.

Thank you.

I'm afraid I'm of no help except I hope someone responds to this with perhaps an actual diagram of some sort...I've read that galvanized pipe is best,(in fact I've seen several) and have read that you don't want the amount of 1/2" - 3/4" pipe for hanging space to be longer than 3' unless you incorporate a vertical center support....the vertical "legs" of the rack should be at least 3/4" pipe for most sturdiness...but that's all I've found so far. I'll let you know if I find an actual blueprint of some kind...

Hi,
Are you still trying to build this clothing rack? I was thinking that you could mock some of the retail racks, but add supports in the center to avoid sagging.

These railed racks could be built out of crude materials such as conduit.

How far below the top bar will this second bar be located?
