I have a 1979 OMC 260. I was in gear and took it out of gear and when trying to re-ingage all I get is a clicking sound. It sounds like it is stuck partially ingaged. No foreward or reverse.

It sounds like you have a shift solenoid problem, you cannot get these new so you will have to pich up used. These are known to have this problem. I seem to remember a new forward and a reverse solenoid were around 400.00 each.
