I have a small 5 by 7 bathroom - vanity, shower, commode.
What are the tricks to make it look bigger?
I was thinking of painting the end wall a darker color (blue) and the rest a light sand color.
The ceiling is 7 feet. Should it be light (white)? or darker to mak it look higher?
thanks

Keep everything light and airy, no dark colors.
Also, a small border at the ceiling height draws the eye up, and makes one think the ceiling is higher than it really is.
I will move this to the Decorating & Design forum for more discussion.

if your main objective is making it look bigger, paint all surfaces (all walls plus the ceiling) the same color - be it light or dark. by avoiding lines of contrast (where one color meets another color) you will create a larger looking space.
in my opinion, a border placed at the ceiling level of a room with only a 7' ceiling will make the ceiling look lower. i would avoid drawing attention to the ceiling at all. therefore, paint it the same as the walls. if you must have a contrast somewhere, do it at the chair rail level. but i would still recommend keeping it all the same color, and use accessories/towels/shower curtains/etc for interest.
however, trying to make a 5x7 bathroom look "big" is impossible. it will never seem like a 12x12 room! there is no way a 5x7 room will ever produce a reaction such as "wow - this room is huge!" so, i would recommend you focus your efforts are creating a beautifully decorated room, and go for reactions more like, "wow - what a gorgeous/cool/fabulous/wonderful/etc. bathroom!" if your bathroom requires a shower curtain, start there. then find coordinating towels & accessories. and then decide on a wallcolor that complements all that.

I saw something on a decorating show years ago that was a nifty idea. The lady hosting the show decided that making a tiny bath look large was not really possible. Instead, she focused on making it look like what she called a *jewel box* with lots of details. The end result was really adorable and nothing looked fake or strange. She just went with what she had and made the best of it.
