A/C was making noise when it starts up on the outside unit, A/C guy put on a time delay which seems to help a little but it still makes a real loud starting sound when it starts.

What should this delay timer be set at? Looked at it and its turned all the way to the right to 10 minutes??? Not sure if it is working or not because when the termostat clicks on just 2 seconds later the outside turns on and makes its noise and they the air starts blowing just 2 seconds after that??? DOes this sound right? A/C guy said the time delay will allow the pressures to balance before it turns on but it still turns on just like it did before with the loud noise. Its sounds like the compressor doesn't want to start and makes this noise for about 3 seconds then all is good.

Time delay is probably in the control circuit to be sure the compressor does not short cycle (compressor shuts down due to a power flicker then immediatley trys to restart against high head pressure) If I understand what you are saying the compressor is noisy even after it sits for ten minutes and then trys to restart is that right? If that is true you will need to have the voltages checked/system pressures checked/compressor amp draw checked/start capacitor checked or one added as needed/reversing valve checked etc. etc. You really need a pro on this unless you have some good AC field experience. You could have a dying compressor just giving its last gasps.

Thanks for responding,

Its a brand new 14 seer Goodman and coil that was put in 2months ago and has been making the start up noise ever since and slowly getting worse. Its a home warranty company using a local small company. They have been out numerous times, check pressures says its ok,etc etc put on a booster thingy, still made loud start up noise, they thought it could be the lineset because the unit requires a 7/8" but they said I already have a 1" ?? and that should not be the problem, now they put on this time delay thing and still does it..... I think I got a bad unit??? The noise is louder and longer in duration the longer the unit sits without running. If it is running all day and shuts off for just a few minutes it usually doesn't make the noise and if it does its not too bad BUT if it sits say 20 plus minutes such as over night when its cooler and doesn't cycle as much its REAL bad. Heck I don't know what else to do??? This thing is brand new shouldn't I be able to get the unit replaced by now because something is got to be wrong with it.

If the indoor unit is above the outdoor unit, especially if the indoor unit is in the attic or on a second floor, you could be getting "liquid flood back". The only cure for this of which I am aware is a solenoid valve in the liquid line. This valve closes as soon as the compressor stops preventing liquid from running back to the compressor. York & others used them a lot in early scroll compressors to prevent the scroll in the compressor from spinning backward.

I'm about to INSIST this a/c company put in a new unit or figure dang thing out now. THe inside coil is in I guess what you call a a/c closet. THe coil sits about the height of my shoulder or abour 5 feet off the ground and the out side unit is just about 15 feet right behind the inside coil on the outside wall sitting on a concrete slab.

This is getting old. Just email goodman for advise see what they say. Is this compressor getting damaged with all this going on. Its been over a 6 weeks since the installation and it seems to be getting worse. I don't want this problem to end up getting fixed just to have a brand new units life spand cut drastically because of all this stuff.

Are these guys suppose to have some kind of labor warranty etc under state laws, Louisiana here. They said if this time delay didn't do it they look into it again and figure it out. Seems like they just keep putting stuff on hoping it works and not actually "figuring" it out like they should.

Right now the termostat will click on then the air will blow a second or too later but warm and then the outside unit kicks on about 2 minutes later then cold air, but it still makes that aweful noise when the outside part comes on. (outside part makes the noise)

THANKS GUYS FOR RESPONDING...

Goodman has started utilizing a copeland scroll compressor these are very good and rarely have bad ones but it does happen. Sounds like you may have found that one in ten thousand. Have the condensing coil replaced as a unit not just the compressor and make sure they change the lineset this time to the correct size.

Calling them monday first thing.. New coil was put in with outside unit same time.
