View Full Version : Tiling around outlets & switches

What is the best way to bring wall outlets wall light switches to the same srface height as the tile? Should I cut the tile to match the wall plate or should I install extensions to the outlets and switches? I've heard of the extensions but can't find any information on hoe to install them. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

EGale1989:

Electrical box extensions are like a short rectangular metal tube that slides inside the existing box. I haven't used them, but you can get them in the electrical department of any home center. From what I understand, though, you just remove the switch or receptical from the existing box, slide the extension in so that the tabs at the front of it rest against the new wall surface, then replace the switch or receptical.

All my walls are plaster, and the original plasterers weren't too careful about putting it on. Sometimes the plaster is missing above or below the box (or both), but the plaster at the sides of the box is extra thick, so the switch ends up being too far behind the switch plate. What I do is slip a short piece (1/4" or so) of rubber vaccuum hose from a car engine over the screws holding the switch or plug in place. If that hose is behind the switch or plug mounting tab, you can tighten down on the hose with the screw until the tab is right where the wall surface should be but isn't. The electrical box extensions are the correct way of doing it, though.
