I took the carpeting off the stairs and refinished the oak threads, however, my problem is the risers. The risers are a mess due to years of lousy paint jobs and of course the carpeting. When you walk in my front door the staircase, which has 13 steps, is right there so I want to make it attractive. I tried sponging but didn't like it. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thank you.

how about painting them solid & stenciling a design (relevant to your decor) on every other one (if each one would be too busy)?

or i saw where they attached an old key to every other one, inside a painted-on diamond shape.

is the problem that the surface isn't nice & smooth? then how about applying a textured wallpaper & painting them?

or tile them.

I agree that doing every riser would be too busy. I may try what you suggested, painting some then stenciling with an ocean theme since my house is on the bay. I'm thinking of doing a design from the center riser and working my way out up and down a couple of risers. Perhaps I'll do some waves and shells and then maybe sponging the others with a light color so it's not overpowering? Thanks for your advice.

sounds good! i'd go for a faux "sand" look on the "plain" ones. a beige & white sponged effect. good luck!

I finished painting my staircase risers as a seaside picture. I started at the bottom with sand dunes and weeds and worked my way up with a lighthouse and a seagull on pilings in the center and at the top a couple of seagulls in the sky. I've gotten many compliments and I am very pleased with the results.

That sounds REALLY pretty! If you can, post pictures so that we can all 'ooh and ahhh' over the job you've done :)
