We bought some non-functional shutters that came with horribly ambiguous instructions.

Step 3 says to drill a hole with a 1/8" bit into the siding and into the wood.

Step 4 says that for vinyl siding to drill a 1/4" hole in the siding but do not drill into the wood.

Does that mean I need to drill a 1/8" into the wood, then a 1/4" into the siding, or does it mean I just need to do the latter and to NOT do the former?

Basically, if anyone wants to give me instructions or a link on how to do this darn thing, go for it!

Since vinyl moves with temp changes you need a bigger hole in the vinyl so the screw isn't tight with the siding but will screw tight with the wood beneath it.

Little bit of clear latex caulk in the hole helps keep water out and also hold the shutters to a small degree....
