I am in the process of designing my home and I want to ensure I design a usefull walk-in closet. What is a good size for a walk in closet? If I want storage on both sides of the walk thru is 6 feet wide a good width or would a 5 foot wide closet suffice? The depth of the closet would be 8 - 9 feet. Is this large enough??

Most of the organizing systems I work with are about 15" from the wall
A 5 foot walkway with shelves and such on either side would be reduced to a 30" walkway
If you are planing organizing systems on both sides that would be pretty narrow

A 6 foot walkway with shelving systems on each side would leave you a 42" walkway
That would give you room even if you wanted some doors (cabinet-type organizers) in there

Okay, I'm only partially jesting when I say this...

You asked "How big should I design my walk-in closet?"

My answer: "As big as you can!!!"
Seriously...assuming that you're going to keep the space organized and functional, I can't envision a closet that would be TOO large! But, it all depends upon how much space you've got available, and what you NEED to store in this closet (how much other storage space do you have available in your home?). Do you need to store off-season AND current season clothing/shoes? For one or two people? Blankets, etc?
