Is it ok to apply ceramic tiles over linoleum
flooring? Has it ever been done before with good results?

Yes, its been done.
Mfgs. recommend you install cement board on the floor and then lay your ceramic tiles on it. It is available in 1/4" and 1/2" thicknesses and is easy to put down. Just follow the mfg. directions.

Concrete backerboard is one way, but an easier alternative might be to staple wire mesh onto the linoleum, apply scratchcoat or thinset over mesh, wait day, and then apply ceramic with thinset. Our local tile guy gave me this advice for slate over an existing hard asbestos tile floor.
