I built my deck using Ipe (brazilian hardwood) for the decking and railtop. Aside from Pennofin (sp?) which I used once, can you recommend a staining for this extremely dense wood that lasts longer? The Pennofin was $50 a gallon and was pretty much gone one year later. I followed the application directions to a T.
Thanks

Penofin is one of the better stains. I wonder if you used one that is specifically for hard woods. You said you followed directions. I'm wondering how much surface preparatoin was in the instructions. For a stain to last, it has to penetrate the wood. However, IPE is so hard, it makes it difficult. Sanding the deck lightly will open some of the grain. Wiping away he dust with a solvent (lacquer thinner) soaked rag will open the pores more.

Be carefull with the lacquer thinner. Don't wipe against any painted or plastic surfaces.

I've seen SuperDeck products last a couple years, but I always tell people they have a choice. If you want a no maintenence (or low) then go with composite. Or, let your IPE turn gray naturally. You will have the knowledge that it will last and last, but not the "wow" factor of a rich, dark hardwood floor.

Most people can't tell the difference between an aged grey IPE deck and pressure treated after a few years. Of course, they'd be waiting a long, long time for the IPE to warp like the PT.

IPE is gaining lots of popularity as it is such a great wood, but like a cedar house, it does require upkeep.
