I have a thin colored line down the middle of my TV screen and the rest of the screen is black. The sound is on but I can't discover the problem with the line. Can anyone tell me what the problem is?

What kind of tv is it, make model, year ?

Need more info to help, sounds like the picture tube has failed, you did not say if this was for all viewing, meaning cable, dvd, vcr, ect.

if it is doing this on all levels, then the picture tube has failed.

It has nothing to do with the picture tube! You have a failure in the vertical output section and is a relatively simple fix. Without a make and model number, it is impossible to be more specific. NUFF SAID
