History: nasty leaky flat roof, shown here if you're curious: http://www.geocities.com/togomor/roofdeck/index.htm
Lath & plaster in room below had been damaged by ancient leaks, and a previous owner had covered it up with drywall, which has subsequently been damaged also. I've demo'd the room below down to studs (a separate but related project) and can see the roof deck from below now. It's close-set 1x6 planking and generally appears to be in good condition.
Except... in the area where the prior leak had occurred. Guess what's there? A 3" knothole that had fallen out of the board. (I found the knot sitting on top of the plaster during demo) Guess the weight of the roofing and heat caused it to sag and crack and presto, there's a hole.
So I'll be replacing that roof some time soon (probably by myself, as I can't seem to get a roofer interested). What should I do to address that knothole area?
1a) replace the entire plank - only problem is I'm not sure how it's attached at ends, or whether it's tongue&groove with it's neighbors.
1b) just replace plank between adjacent joists
2) cover entire surface with a new layer of plywood - problem: not much clearance to door sill, how thick ply would I need?
3) rip up all planks and replace entire deck with ply - problem: if it's not otherwise damaged that's a lot of waste/expense/work
4) apply some sort of flat metal patch over the knothole? or some sort of "localized" fix like that? if so, what?
Thanks for your time.
