I've just bought my first house, so I'll probably be here often asking dumb and not-so-dumb questions. :coffee:

A prominent feature on the front of my house is a deck, which has been painted at least twice and is peeling badly. I'd like to take care of it before winter. I think (but at this point I'm not sure) that it is PT lumber.

After I get it all scraped down, it should be primed before I paint again, right? Anyone recommend a good product? I understand that paying more for primer and paint means it might not have to be redone so often.

All input, advice and recommendations will be appreciated!

Welcome to the forum
You will need to prime before painting. Use an oil base primer. There are many good products out there to finish with. Just make sure you use top of the line products. Most paint manufactures make both cheap and good paint. Talk to friends and neighbors to find out what they have had sucess with in your area. Prep is the most important part of any paint job.
Point to ponder - If you can remove 99% of the old paint consider using a full bodied stain [latex or oil] It doesn't require priming and rarely peels.
