I made my daughters queen size bed. Here is what I used and it looks great. 2 4x8 sheets 3/4 oak - 4 round post like you would have on the front porch. some 2x4 joist hangers - long screws - 2 2x4's - any style trim you like. stain.

For the head board post I cut two post 6 ft and for the foot board post I cut the other two 4 ft. Cut the oak 10" wide the length I neede for a queen bed. Split the 2x4's in half and screw to the inside at the bottom of the 10: oak you cut. This is what your slats will sit on. Screw a joist hanger on each post at the correct height. Now take the 10" oak you cut with the spit 2x4 screwed to it and place them in the joist hangers and screw to the post. There are several ways to attach the head board and foot board to the post. Run 2 strips of something from the back of the post to the back of the headboard you cut out. (I cut mine with a 5" on each side from the inside of the post and 3ft wide) this wil hold it in place fine. Now, i used the trim that I bought and made iamond shapes with it on the front of the head and foot board and used another type decorative trim and put on the edges of the head and footboard. You will be surprised how good this bed actually looks. Good luck and let us know how it went and what you did if diffirent from mine.
