My living room/dining room combo is a big open rectangular room, 11x26. There is a large window in the living room and a smaller one in the dining room. Should they have matching window treatments? I haven't decided yet what I'm going to do.

sort of. they should be somewhat similar, or complimentary. either use the same fabric but in 2 different styles, or the same style in different fabrics. or they can be the exact same. but don't do 2 completely different treatments.

since one window is small and one is large, i'd do different styles on each window, each in proportion to the window size, but use a common fabric for both. that's not to say that each window has to use all the same fabrics - for example: maybe the large window has full length drapery panels in a floral fabric, then the smaller window could have maybe just a valance in a coordinating fabric (like a small check), but with a 3" band at the bottom done in the floral fabric. you get the idea.

what ARE the sizes of these windows?

if both windows are on the same wall, you might want to try to make them look the same. drapery panels & valances can be mounted higher up and further to the sides of the smaller window to make it look like both windows are the same size. depending on the layout of the room, that might be what you need to do.

I do think it's possible to use completely different curtains for each window, if you're going to try and create a visual 'separation' of the spaces, to differentiate the dining area portion of the room from the living room. You can do this through furniture arrangement, area rugs, some accent walls painted with a different color(s). Then the curtains can be completely different, in texture, style, color, etc. But all tones should work together. That's the most important thing.

I have exact same room as you do. I use plain silk drape on the living room's window w/ bigger window and narrow stripe silk drape of the same color (green) on the dinning room's window.

I also has another set of red silk drape that I would like to change one of the window during holiday season, but it looks awark when you have kinda 2 rooms connected and different colors on the windows. I tried it, trust me, same fabric, you would think that red and green would go well especially holidays, but no no...

Or if you want something different, try different tone, same fabric... for example, one is light brown, the other is brown... something like that...
