The casing that holds my whole house filter has become coated with a brown substance, and every three weeks or so I have to change the filter because of the sulfer odor. Anyone have any ideas about what the coating is and how I should clean the casing?

Thanks Chicago...it is on the inside. Do you know how I would clean it, then?

well if its iron i would not bother cleaning it. Rinse it out with clean water maybe wipe it down with a paper towel, install new filter element and put back in service.
I have the same problem with very high iron content. I change my filters every 2-3 weeks (the cheap paper filters).
Others may have more advice but thats what i do and it works fine.
Good Luck!
