Hello!
It appears that I have the same problem lots of other folks have, but I want to clarify the "solution" before I proceed.
We have attempted to remove wallpaper in the bathroom that was glued to the sheetrock. The top layer of the wallpaper removed just fine, but the bottom layer (paper backing with adhesive) is still stuck to the drywall in most places. When I try to pull it down/scrape it off... it damages the sheetrock. We want to paint the wall, so we'll need to fix the problems.
1. Do I have to remove the bottom layer of wallpaper that didn't come off? I'd rather not as it continues to damage the sheetrock.
2. If I do not have to remove that bottom layer, it my next step to prime? If so, do I prime with oil-based primer or Guardz?
3. Then it appears that I need to skim coat/sand the damaged areas and then paint the whole thing. Please confirm that this is the next step.
One other site I visited suggested that we mix joint compound with paint (making the mixture thicker than paint) and using a 3/4" roller, just roll the wall. Said there'd be no priming, no "fixing", no sanding, etc. Do you have thoughts on this way of handling? I'm really afraid of applying primer over the bottom layer of wallpaper that may cause bubbles, etc.
Thanks in advance!

i've always been able to get the papery backing off by spritzing it with super hot water from a spray bottle til it's soaked. using a stiff scrubbing brush with a handle helps to peel off all the little strips (hold the bristles at a 45 degree angle and shove the bristles into the edges of the paper - won't damage the sheetrock like the tip of a utility knife can!). it's time consuming but if you're wanting to paint, you should have a nice smooth surface to paint on. then fill any damage with joint compound, prime, then paint.
