I just purchased a new gas water heater because my old one was leaking out the base. The last one had a great deal of rust and sediment in the bottom of the tank when I drained it, but the water color out of the faucets was always fine. When I installed the new one, I had a problem because one of the mixer-type showers in the house was allowing cold water flow back into the hot water outlet of the heater, so I couldn't get the air out of the tank by opening up a hot water faucet. I opened the TPR valve to let out air until it was gushing water....

Now I notice two things, 1) the new HWH gurgles occasionally and 2) my hot water is now rust-colored.

Does (1) mean there is still a significant air bubble in the tank? Can I expect (2) to go away? Is this a side effect of my old rusty HWH, or from turning the water on and off several times, or does it mean something is wrong with my new tank?

Thx for any advice...

Many times when you turn the water supply off then back on which was the case when you installed your new heater, rust, sediment and gunk can come loose from the surge in water pressure. This stuff can be in the regulator for your home. Or the pipes and fixtures. My guess is you will see it diminish over the next few days.
