we just installed an 8 foot slider. I don't want to use drapes or verticals for a covering. Do you think using two horizontal pleated shades would look ridiculous? I don't plan on having them down often since the door is in the back of the house, but I do want some privacy at night for when I am alone. What do you think? I already have a curtain valance on the door which is placed higher on the wall so we could we install the shades up past the casings too?

yes, i do, but you seem sold on the idea so go for it! it's your house!!!
it sounds like you really just need something functional at night when you're there by youself, so i'd say they'd work fine for that. if you have people over at night, they'll be raised up & hidden under the valance, right? if so, i think that's fine.
