My bathroom has 1/2" painted drywall with a full shower/bath combo. Can I tile over the drywall if it is solid? What do I need to do about the Painted Surface, if anything?

Apply a thin sheet of 1/4 inch durock over the existing if you dont want to tear it out.
Then tile over that. Since you doing it yourself you are already saving lots of money so maybe you should tear out the existing sheet rock since its probably alread soft and go through the proper steps.
