Help please in diagnosing:

Thermostat works and attempts to start condensor. Condensor groans, but won't start. Condensor then stops trying to start for a couple of minutes, then tries it again. Pretty good strain on the entire electrical system. Don't know the brand, but it's a 3.5 ton unit. 50 amp fuse running the condensor. Fuse will trip after 9 or 10 tries by the condensor to start. Condensor was intermittently tripping fuse a couple of weeks ago. Had unit serviced yesterday. Technician added freon. Does that increase the pressure in the compressor, requiring more juice to start? It's 110 degrees today, and the service tech is not around. Any help?

You may need a start-assist device for your unit. Obvoiusly the compressor is not starting. It may be because there is something mechanical wrong with it or it may just be having trouble getting up to speed. It would be best not to let it cycle on the overload because if the overload weakens and it is inside the compressor, you will need to replace the compressor pre-maturely. I would suggest getting the tech back out and checking it over again. It is a good practice for the techs to check the values of the capacitors when they do service, It only takes a minute and can prevent problems such as yours. To answer your other question, an overcharged system will hava a little more trouble getting started but there would be other negative side effects also.
