working on a old sears window unit . problem: fan motor runs but gets hot after about 3min.motors gets extremely hot .its a 230v motor.replaced it with new but it does the same thing. Could cap be bad ?

The cap could indeed be bad. Whenever replacing a motor the cap should be replaced as well. Make sure to get the correct cap for the motor.
