does anyone know about the durability of leather furniture. We are looking at buying a new living room set and are concerned about leather vs cloth fabric. Thanks for any help, Brad

Leather is very durable
Much easier to clean than cloth
It does have to be maintained (leather cleaner and conditioner)
And there is cheap leather out there
But mostly it wears very well

There are many different types of leather, finishes, dyes, and coatings. Make sure you understand what is involved in cleaning and maintenance of upholstery whether buying leather or fabric. Some leather upholstery can not be cleaned.
Leather with heavier pigment (opaque coloring) and corrected grain are the easiest to care for. Aniline leathers, with transparent color, require more delicate care. Darker colors tend to hide soil more than lighter colors. When shopping, learn about the type of finish:
Pigment: protective opaque color which coats the grain very consistently. It is the most durable, stain resistant finish but is slightly cooler to the touch.
Semi-aniline: combines aniline with pigment to enhance uniformity in color and soil resistance while remaining soft to the touch. Aniline: clear (transparent) organic stain, which colors but doesn’t coat completely. It is less stain resistant, but leaves the hide softer, more pliable and warmer to the touch.
All genuine cowhide leathers are good quality and a good investment. Better leathers are softer, slightly warmer to the touch, more pliable and slightly heavier. Many quality leathers are treated with protective products at the factory. Regular dusting with a damp, clean cloth is all that is required.

if you're worried about dirt & spills, leather is a good choice over fabric. but if you've got pets with sharp claws, leather can be easily scratched up. some friends of ours had a declawed cat (front paws only) who loved to sleep on their new leather chair. but whenever kitty went to jump down, he dug his back claws into the leather for a good push-off (since leather is slippery under furry paws) and had it all scratched up in no time. something to consider. :o

Go to the: www.hancockandmoore.com site. They make one of the top if not the top hand made leather furniture in the US. They explain every detail about leather, dyes, etc. TOP FULL GRAIN ANALIN DYED is the BEST leather there is. It is that simple. Hope you find what you want. do NOT let salespeople fool you, do your homework and buy the best you can afford.
