I have a fisher EQ-285 it seems to make unusual sounds when power is turned on do i need a new eq or does it need some maintenance? Any help much appreciated.

but as long as the noise goes away pretty quickly-and stays gone, then I don't think I'd worry about it. It does take a little bit of time for the internals of the eq to stabilize after power-on. Try the "bypass" button-is the noise still there? (Bypass should take the eq out of the picture, the sound in is the same as the sound out.)
On the other hand, a good cleaning, dusting and general check-up won't hurt it either.
Try powering up the reciever/amps last, that way any sounds generated by everything else powering up won't be heard.
Try to write down or mark where all the sliders and buttons were, you'll probably move a few taking it out of the entertainment center. This way you can reset it back to where it was- or fairly close.
