I had a new ac unit installed in may and my electric bill went up by 30 kwh per day. I went from a Whirlpool that I was told was at least 25 years old and a 4 seer to a new 12 seer unit. I have not changed the temperature in the house and I am desperate to figure out why my bill may have jumped. I was told by the power company to check to see it the heat strips were on. Is this something I can do myself? If any of you are electricians, can you give me any advice to figure out why my bill has more than doubled?!!! I live in a 870 sf home and my bill was 300 dollars this month. Last year at this time it was 120 per month. It is actually slightly cooler this year than last year. I have done nothing else to change my elec. usage. I am desperate, that bill is what I make in a week. I can't keep having this happen. Do I need an electrician to come and test the - whatever - all m electrical units are putting out? Would an electrician be able to do this?

Thanks

You should call the installing company and have them look at it.

Do you have any clue what size the old a/c was vs the new one?

As said I'd call back the installer and let them inspect it and se waht they tell you, then I'd call the electric company back and let them know what the tech told you, work with both of them that way you have a better chance at getting to the root of the problem.
