View Full Version : Tons of Carpenter Ants dying in the sunroom
Everyday there are tons of black Carpenter Ants with or without wings died in my sunroom, especially when the weather is hot and humid, but I never see them at winter time, a month ago we have spraied pest frog inside of the insulation of the wall and didn't kill many ants. The entire sunroom was covered with wood panel wainscoting and there is a piece of wood panel was damaged by the rain, so I'm suspecting it attarcted the ants, but why are they dying all over the room? Anything I can do to get rid of them live or die?

When a carpenter ant colony gets very large (2,000 plus) it will produce swarmers. Carpenter ants use wood for nesting; they do not eat it like termites. But, they will use termite tunnels for nesting.
Ant baits are not always successful because carpenter ants eat a variety of things. Sprays are not always successful because the queen continues to lay more eggs. Locating the colony and directly treating is the most successful method of control. If you can find piles of sawdust, this will show where the entrance is. Follow worker ants to see where they go. The nest may be in walls or even outdoors. All moisture issues must be corrected. All infested wood will need to be removed. If you can not remove infested wood, puff insecticide dust recommended for carpenter ants into wall voids.
Ants will walk through the dust and contaminate the colony. If you have discovered the entrance, puff dust into entrance. You can make your duster out of a plastic bottle with a tip (empty mustard bottle). Fill bottle about 1/3 full. Sevin dust is effective.
Make sure all moisture issues are addressed. Trim trees and bushes back so they do not touch the house. Paint or seal wood on exterior of home. Replace decayed or damaged wood. No soil should be in contact with wood on house. Do not store firewood next to house. A regular treatment of foundation and soil along perimeter of house with insecticide will keep insects at bay.
