The key broke off in the deadbolt. I wanted to replace the handleset anyway so this is a perfect time. But, I am not sure all sets will fit. I understand the backset latch, etc. What I do not want to do is take the handle off and find that the new handle is longer or shorter than the other one. I can't seem to find this type of info when searching the internet. It does not tell the handle length. I am not sure what style of handleset I have, but it is made by masterlock. It is 8 1/2 inches from center of thumbknob to where handle attaches to the door at the bottom. Any suggestions on how to conduct a search or choose the right handleset?

Typically what you would need to see are the installation instructions. Some manufacturers websites have them or can get them for you as well as service oriented retailers. For example there are some dimensions on this:

Contacting the manufacturer or a distributor will be able to supply you with other needed dimensions or check the installation templates in the box.

It's unlikely that you'll find another gripset that will line up exactly with the old cutouts unless it's an exact match of your old model.
But an alternative would be to install brass push plates to cover all old cutouts and redrill your new holes through them (don't forget to line up with the existing latch and bolt holes in the doors edge). That way you don't limit yourself in choices of new door hardware.
