I have had a new solid surface counter installed, and want to tile my backsplash wall. Can I tile directly on top of the present laminate backsplash or must I remove it?

Remove the laminate first for the best results. It "can" be done the other way, and it has been done the other way, but slum rental property methods always seem to create more problems, somewhere down the line. It's your choice.
