Hi! My AC stopped working sometime last week and we had it repaired just about two days ago. We found that it lacked gas so we got a refill. The AC worked well for a day and a half and then we began to experience the same problem. Today a contractor came back again and found that the unit is frozen with a huge block of ice and there is also a gas leakage. Is there a possibility of a flood in the basement to where the pipe leads? If so, is it a heavy flood or just a minor with wetness here and there? Should I lay out newspapers in the furnace room as a safety precaution? I'm told to leave the fan on and just let the ice melt. Is that okay for the fan to remain on? The same guy will be back two days from now and we'll take it from there. But please answer my questions about the present situation. Thank you.

You should be just fine the way he told you to do it. Just monitor it now and then in case you start getting some water around the base of the airhandler. It's not going to cause a Noah type flood though.

Leaving the fan on is fine, when the tech goes back ask him to find the leak and repair it because you will again lose freon, just a matter of time.

As its this bad make sure after they find and fix the leaks they also put a new drier in the unit .Then vacuum pump it down good before they put new freon in it.
