I am going to plumb in a 120 gal retention tank. Is there any advantage to using a check valve in addition to a ball valve at the input?

I don't think so. You will want a ball valve to isolate the tank for service purposes. You have a check valve either at the pump, the well head or in the form of a foot valve at the bottom of your well. While your retention tank has a separate discharge from the inlet, I see no reason to duplicate things.
