View Full Version : Tiling bathroom floor: what do I do about the toilet?

Have I bit off more than I can chew? At the tile supply place I was told that I could use cement board over the existing luan and linolium. However, if I do that, it will raise the floor up at least 3/4." How will the toilet reach the pipe? Use another wax ring and get bolts that are 2x as long? Oh, and another thing, for the heck of it I got out a 24" level, just to check... the floor's not level. The level doesn't even sit level. Is it time to hire a professional? I hate to do that when I didn't even get my hands dirty yet. :(

No problem. Been there. Done that. Get new toilet bolts. Double up on wax rings with plastic flanges. It works fine. Good Luck!

sigh, that's a relief. Any advice about the no-so-level floor? Will the cement board help with that? I'm thinking not.

Don't worry about the floor level, unless you can't walk on it. LOL. Seriously, as long as everything else is o.k., you can shim the level of everything else. Good Luck!

You didn't mention just "how" your floor wasn't level. If it simply runs downhill from one wall to an opposing wall, it isn't a terrible problem. If the floor runs uphill AND downhill, you may be in for cracked tile or grout in the future. Use your level or a straight board to see if the floor has sporatic rises or dips around the room. That would be a problem, although there are solutions that can be easily implemented by inexperienced installers.
