How important is it to use a backerboard if the wall is done in green board? I'm only taking the tile up about 18 inches.

Green board is only moisture resistant. Continued exposure to moisture can rot the backing, then you'll wind up redoing the tile. Backer board provides a stonger base for the tile and it doesn't have the same rot problem as green board.
