i built a heavy arbor with 2x4's, wooden screening on sides and 4 x 4 pressure wood poles. that was the easy part. now i have to install.

i have directions that i trust are accurate but oh, so complicated using batten boards, about 8 of them to set up exactly where the posts are to be. then i must dig down about 30 - 34 inches.

i saw at home depot something called a ground spike, which fits the 4 x 4 poles and has a big spike on the bottom. the idea is to pound it into the ground and insert the poles, then attach the arbor. there is a modification to this, in that another model has a swivel head so that if it is pounded in crooked, a simple tug will pull it up straight.

one problem is that i have clay - in summer it becomes like concrete.

my question (s): in clay will i be able to be successful in pounding into the earth for 34 inches?

also has anybody had any success using these holders?

is there an easy way to erect this arbor?

any feed back would be much appreciated.
