My six month old Whirlpool gas hot water heater (may be flame lock) decided to take advantage of the new freshwater pool in my basement (courtesy of Dennis) and go for a swim. Unfortunately, it now refuses to work.

Its model number is FG1H4040S3NOV, and its product number is 0730263.

When I try to re light the pilot, I get a flash of blue and then nothing. This is a gas flash and the igniter sparks whenever pressed. However, all I get is a flash - the pilot flame will not stay on even when I hold the red reset button down.

I saw the water in the basement, but did not think that it go high enough to hurt the unit. However, it must have reached the burner to extinguish the flame. Also, some of the insulation is wet but I doubt that the water reached the valve.

Is it possible to get this unit back on line? If so, is it adviseable? I plan to sell this house within the month, but I will live three doors down and do not want to leave my new neighbor with a problem.

I am not afraid to take it apart.

Thank you for your help.

A quick update:

I just relit the heater. Hopefully, it will stay on.

Is there anything that I should do to minimize the impact of the water, or will the burners dry everything out?

Thanks.

Make sure your burner is burning all the way around and of good color. Look for soot around your vent area. The insulation will try out in a short period of time. If the water made it to control valve then this should be replaced.

Any gas burning appliance which has been submerged is DONE FOR . All manufacturers clearly state that they may not continue in service. You risk a catastrophic failure down the road such as stuck open gas valves, etc. Please get a new heater immediately.
