I am thinking about replacing my roof-top swamp cooler with A/C.

1. I was told the A/C could be mounted on the roof in the same place the swamp cooler was. Is this true?

2. The swamp cooler is connected to the duct work throughout the house -- cool air comes out of same vents in each room that furnace air comes out of in the winter. Will this save any money or time because we don't have to create new duct work?

3. My furnace is crammed up under the eaves in a utility room upstairs, so there isn't much space around it. Does part of the A/C need to be attached to the furnace? Mounted near it? Can it be in an attic nearby?

4. I need to cool 1600 sq feet, mostly on a first floor but there is a loft and lots of air space because of the vaulted ceilings. What size AC do I need?

5. What else should I consider? What else should I ask contractors when I have them bid?

Thanks in advance for help and advice!!

It may be possible to put a package unit up there but you would have to have return air ducted up to it.

Sounds like you have a very unique situation and would probably need to get some profesional eyeballs on it. Go ahead and call some of the long established contractors in your area and get their ideas.
