I live in a high calcium area and my water heater after 5 years now Tings and Pings whenever heating the water.. Sure sign of calcium deposits in the tank.

I'm looking into new water heaters and find that Roto Swirl is supposed to keep deposits from forming. Does this system actually work? Is there any other water heater systems that solve this?

Is there anyway to clean out the existing water heater? It's not to the point of taking a long time to heat water yet. It still heats water pretty efficiently.

Any ideas / tips are appreciated. I heard that water softener would solve this problem but I hate those darn things. Despise them.

stryguy, Welcome to the DIY Forums.
The Roto-flow swirls the water as it enters the tank through the cold water inlet. This would help clean out the deposits somewhat and reduce build-up. The water heater isn't the only thing that will suffer from calcium build-up. Eventually your valves will start clogging on the other fixtures. Also the aerators on faucets and probably the screens in the washing machine hoses will be affected. I have included a link for flushing and draining water heaters. Good luck.
