It is comming from the compressor, makes more noise in the heat mode than when the a/c is running. contractor says its normal, is this true? do all heat pumps make this noise

Can you pump it down and capture the refrigerant in the unit. This will tell if the compressor is laboring or doing it's job.

What happens with shutting down the vapor valve when in the cool mode sometimes it helps me to narrow down what the compressor is doing.

Is the compressor a scroll or a recip.?

If it is a recip. can the problem be a broken spring?

Just a few thoughts

Check it out.

by pumping it down do you mean i need to lower the pressure in the system? its a scroll compressor. thanks scottg

Has your installing dealer made an on site inspection? If not, you should insist that he does this. Carrier makes claims of having one of the quietest condensing units. If you can't get satisfaction, contact Carrier. Obviously unit should be under warranty.
