View Full Version : making longgggg gate turnbuckles

I'm building a 5 ft. high fence around 4 acres to contain horses as well as dogs and have several areas that need 12-14 ft. openings for gates. The fence wire is just typical farm fencing (RedBrand-Nonclimb fence) and I need to use the fencing as gates also because standard tube gates won't hold the dogs in.

So, I plan to build, as light weight as possible, wooden frame gates so I can attach the fence wire. Because of the opening sizes (12-14ft.), I'll make the openings as double gates. Therefore I'll have gates that are around
7ft. long x 5ft. high. Trying to avoid any extra weight on these gates, and in wanting to have some form of adjustment through the years as they sag, I wanted to use some sort of wire or turnbuckle system for the gates diagonal brace (instead of using lumber for a cross diagonal brace).

My question is: Does anyone know of where turnbuckle systems of this length
(aprox.- 8ft.) can be purchased? Or is this just something that would be made up myself by purchasing various materials at any hardware store? If the situation calls for me to make them up, can someone give me a brief description of the parts and how it is done. I've installed many rod turnbuckles on screen doors, but I have never seen a size like the ones I'll need sold in any store. Probably making them are going to be the ticket......I just need help in the parts list........thanks in advance.

vett82ce,

Don't worry about the weight, worry about the STRENGTH!!

Metal framed gates won't sag or rot. Wood will do both!!

Lightweight frames -- 1-5/8" tube stock (chain link fencing posts) make an EXCELLENT gate frame. You won't need cables and turnbuckles, as long as you cross brace the frame.
