View Full Version : Painting over stain.
In my rush to get 2 boards stained I grabbed the wrong can and stained them with a MinWax stain that already has polyurethane in it. I don't want to stain the boards any darker, but I do need to put a heavier coat of polyurethane on them, they'll be outside. Problem is the MinWax is an oil based product the polyurethane I have is water based. Can I use this over the MinWax or will it just peel off?
I wouldn't apply latex poly over oil base. If the wood is to be exposed to the elements you need to use a spar urathane.

Yep, the oil will reject the water-based poly. Buy a pint of oil poly or spar varnish. Also, those stain/poly combos dry with a greasy feel. I'd scuff sand it first, then hit it with a coat of oil.
Yeah, that's what I thought. Next time I won't be such a rush and pay attention to what I'm using!!!

The Minwax product you used was undoubtedly "Polyshades" which is not an exterior product. You may eventually have an issue with that product's lack of UV protective additives. It will likely fade in the sun if it's exposed to any degree and may further break down.Minwax also makes a spar urethane called "Helmsman" which is a good product.I'd apply a couple of coats to help preserve the interior product on the surface.Prepare the surface as has been suggested first. Also to just make a minor comment,as a retailer who deals with packaging trends and sells Minwax products, you will not find a "pint" of what you are looking for in Minwax and the likelyhood of a pint in most lines is slim.Much more likely you'll find half-pint or quart sizes.
