I am in need of some advice. I took apart a ceiling light fixture and was not smart enough to remember how it was wired. Now the light goes on but stays on. The switch does not work so I obviously did something wrong. Here is the scenario:
My new fixture has a ground wire and then 2 black wires and 2 white wires. Coming out of the box or ceiling there are 2 black wires, 2 tan wires and a red wire. Does anyone have any idea how to wire this? Please let me know. I tried attaching the 2 blacks to the 2 blacks and the 2 whites to the 2 tans. Then I just capped the red but this caused the light to work but not the switch (which I haven't touched). I would love anyadvice or suggestions please!!!!!

Is the light controlled by more than one switch? If yes, then the red wire is likely to be connected to the black wire of the light with the other black wires connected together separately but this is only a guess from someone who isn't in the same room as the wiring. The whites are normally all connected together. Might want to wait for another opinion before trying this suggestion.

What you are calling tan is probably white.
Connect the white wires together, all of them the ones in the ceiling and the ones from the light.
Connect the two black wires in the ceiling together with nothing else.
Connect the red wire to the black wires from the light.
Connect all ground wires together, and to the metal box.
