oil or latex primer on wood panelling?

various web sites say either, or lean towards an oil primer. my panelling is stained with a dark shade and I plan to paint it an off-white. I'd rather use a latex primer (less odor), but not if the stain is going to bleed through it. anyone out there ever have bleeding problems using latex primer over stained panelling?

Never had bleeding problems, but adhesion is a concern over paneling. It was most likely varnished or poly'ed in the past, and most wood cleaners have wax in them. I'd go with the oil too.

I agree with PWG, use oil base. Don't forget to sand and clean the surface first.

I have used a white shellac to primer paneling with great success
It sticks but it stinks
Odor-wise that is
It's really stinky
As odor is a concern, maybe the oil is better for you
I wouldn't bother with the latex

I haven't tried this one,but it looks good---high hide-----dries flat for good holdout -sandseasy---and as always sticks
